LAUGHistan, headed by technology entrepreneur HANSDIP SINGH BINDRA, is a production company dedicated to bringing contemporary works of THEATER, FILM and MUSIC into the mainstream with a strong emphasis on preserving authenticity. With his immense talent and long experience in the entertainment industry, SAMRAT CHAKRABARTI is the creative force of the production house.

Samrat Chakrabarti (CREATIVE)

Samrat-ChakrabartiSamrat is an award-winning actor and internationally acclaimed musician. His musical collaborators include: Robert Brustein (founder of Yale Repertory Theatre & American Repertory Theatre), Sabir Khan (son of musical maestro Ustad Sultan Khan), Jared Stein (from the Broadway show American Idiot), Deborah S. Craig (from the Broadway show The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee), Roopak Ahuja (from the band, House Jacks), Jerold E. Solomon (from the Broadway show South Pacific), Meetu Chilana (from Cirque Du Soleil), Kevin Smith Kirkwood (from the upcoming Broadway show Cyndi Lauper’s Kinky Boots), Manu Narayan (from the Broadway show Bombay Dreams), Eric Pillai (Music Producer of Anurag Kashyap’s film Gangs Of Wasseypur), Shabbir Ahmed (Award winning Bollywood Lyricist), DJ Suketu, DJ Aqeel, John Clark, Ajay Naidu, The Hyannis Sound and others. Chakrabarti has also composed music for over a dozen films, including, Deepa Mehta’s film adaptation of Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children, Soham Mehta’s Student OSCAR winning film: Fatakra (Firecracker), Rachel Greenberger’s The Only Thing, Rehana Mirza’s Hiding Divya, Ted Wallach’s Oil: A Love Story, Sundaram Tagore’s Natvar Bhavsar: Poetics of Color, and Manish Acharya’s Loins of Punjab Presents. He is the recipient of a U.S. CARA for Best Original Pop/Rock Song for his composition “What’s It all About” and the 2010 TMG Award for Global Achievers in the category of Film, TV and Drama, for his outstanding body of work as an actor. Hansdip Singh Bindra (PRESIDENT)

hansdip-singh-bindraBeing born and raised in Kolkata, India, Hansdip Singh Bindra has had an affinity for the arts from a young age. He was constantly exposed to the finest cinema and music throughout his childhood by his family and friends. As a Sikh Punjabi living in Kolkata, he got the best of both worlds: the rich cultural experience of traditional Sikh Punjabi practices while being immersed by the works of Rabindranath Tagore, Satyajit Ray and other legendary Bengali artists. This unique upbringing, planted a seed for his future endeavors.

Hansdip moved to USA for his undergraduate degrees at Lafayette College on full-scholarship. He later went on to get his graduate degree from Seton Hall University. Having successfully establishing himself as a Technology Entrepreneur by the early 2000s, he decided to focus his time and energy on his passions: Activism and the Arts.

He started by working as a Civil Rights Activist in association with The Sikh Coalition in New York and SALDEF in Washington, DC. Hansdip was one of the key players in the Post 9/11 Civil Rights Movement and continues to be an active advocate for Equal Rights.

On the artistic side, Hansdip rapidly made a presence on the New York City theatre and film scene. He has been in the Organizing Committee and the Marketing Chairperson of the Sikh International Film Festival in NYC since 2008. He also has been an avid contributor and supporter of the other New York City International film festivals such as SAIFF and NYIFF.

In 2011, Hansdip partnered up with internationally renowned actor/musician Samrat Chakrabarti to start their own production company: LAUGHistan. It is a production company dedicated to bringing contemporary works of THEATER, FILM and MUSIC into the mainstream with a strong emphasis on preserving authenticity.

As President of LAUGHistan, Hansdip started out by producing a trailer for an original TV Pilot called “Sikhs and the City”. The trailer has gotten tremendous press and coverage. The TV Pilot is currently in development.

In the winter of 2012, LAUGHistan produced  the New York Independent Theater Awards nominated, first Indian-American full-length off Broadway musical – “BUMBUG The Musical” by Samrat Chakrabarti and Sanjiv Jhaveri.

Hansdip also serves on the Advisory Board of the Punjabi International Film Festival (PIFF) & the International Film Festival of South Asia (IFFSA) – Toronto, Canada.
